The Great Japan Trip 2026 all of May & June
Hi everyone, Josh will be away in Japan for all of May and June. This will reduce our operating days/hours, sorry about that. The hours have been updated on google maps and on this website, written just above this blurb. Notably we will now be closed on Tuesdays, with reduced evening hours on Mondays. Like before though, if you would like to book a private tasting for you and your friends, surely Daniel and Nataliya would both be welcoming to that. Please drop us an email here and we can arrange that.
If you’d like to follow Josh’s trip through Japan, he will be posting on our instagram and youtube page.
We will be sure to have a lot of interesting stuff when he returns.
Bye for now!
The Tea Cult 1 Year Anniversary! Monday April 27 2026
Time flies… We’re almost a year old. I’ll be pouring free teas on this day, come visit and celebrate if you have a chance!
—————–
March 29th 2026 – A spring update
Hey everyone, the new year of tea has begun, the earliest Chinese spring teas will arrive the day after tomorrow (March 31st) – those of you deeply interested in green tea will celebrate this feat of getting teas like this so early in the year despite being across the world. It’s really a wonderful aspect of being a tea drinker in this current era of international priority shipping and the internet.
Long Jing (Dragon Well), Bi Luo Chun (Green Snail Spring / Scary Fragrance), Huangshan Mao Feng (Fur Peaks from Yellow Mountain), and ‘Matryoshka’ Giant golden needle black tea from Yunnan are the first teas to arrive this year.
I expect to get some great sencha from Ashikubo tea works while I’m in Japan. I’m also hoping to bring back ‘SOMF’ Tai Ping Hou Kui this year too, but it wasn’t ready at the time I placed my first order.
Early spring teas like this aren’t for everyday drinking, they represent the best of the best green teas that exist in a year, therefore they aren’t coming cheap. They’re a celebration of the concept of green tea, and one that I hope you’ll be willing to try when you visit the shop.
In other news, I will be away in Japan for all of May and June. Daniel will still run the shop on Fridays and Saturdays unless otherwise noted on this site and Instagram. My friend Nataliya might be stepping up to run the shop on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays – though the hours might change. We’re still working out details.
I’ll host a tea popup in Tokyo on Thursday May 28th at a currently undisclosed location. The focus will be on showing the Japanese market the kinds of teas we’re crushing in the tea cult, and telling some stories along the way. We’re not sure if its going to be bilingual or I’ll just do it in Japanese – that’s something to play by ear. If you’ll be in the area please feel free to write to me, I’ll certainly save space for you.
I think that’s all for now. Thanks a lot!

The Tea Cult will now be open Friday and Saturday (staffed by Daniel Kim, formerly of Cafe Jindo) from 10am until 4pm. Besides The Tea Cults full tea menu, Daniel will also be serving a small selection of pour over coffees.
Remember that you can book private events with me whenever you want, don’t worry about my schedule, send me a reservation request with your hopeful date and time and I’ll accept it if I’m able!
Thanks guys!
On April 27th 2025 The Tea Cult opened its doors to Calgarians.
The Tea Cult is a cozy, slow-paced, six-seat tea room full of cultural heritage intricately woven together with stories and modern art. It’s a highly personal space with design elements that are eccentric, unconventional, and playfully inappropriate.
The publicly open days and hours of The Tea Cult are unfortunately rather limited. If the posted hours don’t work for you to visit me at The Tea Cult, you can also try my (nearly) full menu at Carino during our dinner service Wednesday to Saturday, or enjoy a smaller list of select offerings at Heliopolis Social Cafe or Cafe Jindo. I’m happy to open privately (outside of posted business hours) to curate guided tastings or teach classes; please email me to discuss this.
Most of the people who come to see me probably enjoy tea, but not a small number come just to listen to the stories (I’ve even been told I’m a good storyteller :^) ). I’ve been told I’m passionate, articulate, charismatic, and a good teacher; while I don’t know about any of that, be assured that I’ll do my best to make sure you leave with positive thoughts about our time together.

Please note google maps takes you to a weird back alley parking space. There’s a parking lot you can stay in for 2 hours, and plenty of street parking nearby too.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions? We have answers.
Do you accept reservations?
Yes, we accept reservations. Please call, email, or book through instagram. There are only 6 seats and they can be reserved for 2 hour windows while my shop is under regular operating hours.
Do you have anything to eat?
Not yet, but soon I hope to add a rice dish called ochazuke. Currently the shop is just serving tea.
Is the shop wheelchair accessible?
I’m sorry, it might not be. The inside of the shop is very tight. It’s an old building, and there is no wheelchair access from the parking lot. There is a ramp from the back alley.
Is there any parking available?
Yes, there is a 6 spot parking lot adjacent to the shop (though it is quite contested space). There is paid street just outside the parking lot on 9th avenue. There is plenty of free parking along 8th avenue and more on 14th street.
Can I order brewed tea to go? How about dry leaves?
No problem. The full menu is available to brew. It is a tea shop, I sell the dried leaves.
Is it a child friendly space?
There’s a lot of erotic innuendo used in the space as personally meaningful decor. I’d say that depends on you as a parent. There is nothing explicit.
Can I book a private tasting event?
Absolutely. Private events can be booked any day, at any time. I will endeavour to fulfill your wishes. Please get in touch with me to discuss availability, pricing, etc.
I wrote the article “The Key to the Sacred Place” to suggest that with intention, tea can guide us into a unique mental space. While many factors influence our success in reaching this space, I am committed to discovering the path of least resistance—not only to help others access it but also to explore it deeper myself, and uncover the hidden treasures that surely reside within.
